Universities in the United States dominate the rankings of universities. In the UK also some universities consistently perform very well. In mainland Europe universities are doing well but less than in the UK. It is striking that nearly all Dutch universities are in the top 200 of the “Shanghai ranking”: the academic ranking of world universities. Chinese universities quickly are going up. From 16 in the top 500 in 2004 to 62 in 2018. I will first analyse what reasons might be for the Dutch universities ranking high. One element is the rigorous research evaluation and I will discuss worldwide trends in these evaluations. Then I will compare European and US universities in research and teaching. After an overview of this current situation I will try to look into the future and discuss developments in the universities in particular with relation to societal relevance , funding and the curriculum in the future.
